
Abstract: data.world—the Austin-based data sharing & collaboration platform—has been working with the US Census Bureau to ingest the American Community Survey in new formats (geo coded tabulations and semantic linked data) to help data users enrich analyses with vital US demographic information. An important goal for this NSF-funded effort is to empower more data scientists to use this fundamental source of data and contribute to its development.
This talk will cover:
* Overview of the ACS and its distribution channels
* ACS data currently available on data.world and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Public Datasets
* Linked ACS – overview of semantic web + ACS microdata in linked data format
* Demo of the data.world platform and query tool
* Tutorial on how to upload your own data and link to ACS datasets
Bio: Alexandra Barker serves as the Data Dissemination & Media Relations Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau. She is responsible for managing all relationships with stakeholders through the dissemination of Census data and information. She also manages all media relations in New England, New York, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico. Alexandra works closely with local and federal governments, congressional offices, businesses, non-profits, media, universities, tribes, etc. She is also part of the Developer’s Engagement Team for the Census Bureau, which mission is to provide developers with data resources and information about the Census API and City SDK. Their goal is and to facilitate and increase the use of Census data for application development.
In her previous position, Alexandra worked as a Supervisory Statistician for the U.S. Census Bureau, overseeing all data collection operations for the American Community Survey in MA and PR.
Alexandra Barker received a Journalism degree from PUC-RJ, Brazil. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and International Relation from the University of Massachusetts.
