Predicting Alzheimer’s: Generating Neural Networks to Detect the Neurodegenerative Disease

Abstract:

Every day we see examples of the impact of AI in transportation, information technology, finance, and other sectors. However, the transformative impact has not been fully realized in medicine and especially personalized medicine. Computing has become very powerful and AI algorithms have become smart enough to spot patterns in patient characteristics and treatments to provide discovery.

This talk will highlight a deep learning project in personalized medicine, leading to early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease for patients, finding contributing factors in historical diagnosis and medication, medical image recognition, and a demo of the decision support tool built for clinical facilities. This non-profit effort is lead by Foundation for Precision Medicine with partnership from Google, Stanford University, Yale School of Medicine, and Mayo Clinic. The deep learning algorithms are based on 100k Alzheimer’s patient record selected from 4 Million patients.

Topics Include:
• How to reinvent healthcare with data science for the future
• Challenges of healthcare industry with Alzheimer’s disease in the past decades
• Collaborative filtering methods to select patient control match groups
• Deep learning models to detect the disease early
• Transfer Learning and CNN models to detect the disease in MRI imaging
• Visualizing patient results and how to change the trajectory of disease
• Decision support dashboards to be implemented in Alzheimer’s facilities
