Abstract: While Machine Learning and Deep Learning have been around for decades, recent advances in these techniques have catapulted them into the mainstream. These advances are in large part due to the collaborative efforts by Open Source developers. Data scientists and engineers, statisticians, physicists, chemists, biologists, and other data driven fields now consider Open Source tools to be the standard, but they often use thier own siloed niche tools. These siloes are barriers to solving some of the world's most challenging problems, which will require deep interdisciplinary collaboration. In this talk, we'll focus on some specific long-standing challenges in Machine Learning and Computer Vision, and how the open analytics platform Apache Spark, is a key enabler to bring about advances in those problems.
