Abstract: 

Creating a large data science team offers many challenges as well as opportunities. From overseeing a dozen or more projects, to hiring and maintaining technical diversity, to setting a technical vision – a manager must balance the everyday and the big-picture. In this talk I talk about the rules I’ve developed to maximize the leadership, the science, and the relationships to make your team happy and productive.

Bio: 

Troy Lau PhD is the Machine Intelligence Group Leader and Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Draper. His team of 30 staff and students have diverse backgrounds in physics, electrical engineering, biostatistics, biology, computer science, economics, and aeronautics. They have deployed operational big data/machine learning technologies for the intelligence community as well as commercial customers and have delivered capabilities across a range of domains from biomedical, financial, defense, intelligence, and other areas. Dr. Lau received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Michigan studying computation neuroscience and the complex relationship between network topology and function in the brain. He has authored 10 refereed journal articles these relevant fields and presented work over a dozen times.
