Abstract: This talk will outline the evolution of data annotation starting with the computer vision and deep learning research fueled by the ImageNet competition, particularly the revolutionary year 2012 when the deep learning revolution began.
Deep Learning requires huge amounts of data, and virtually all of this data requires some human data annotation. This data is the driving force behind teaching drones to perform autonomous tasks such as detecting and avoiding obstacles while in flight, sending inspectors real-time visual data of inspection assets, and safely lowering packages to the ground during drone delivery. A new industry has been created to support this need which more and more modelers may need to access. Modelers that use this kind of data are often relatively unfamiliar with the process of labeling and annotating these datasets at scale.
The talk will conclude by presenting some of the challenges of the data annotation itself. There will be an opportunity during the talk to look behind the scenes by watching the annotation take place and seeing what the data looks like before and after annotation, as well as better understanding how quality control is ensured during annotation.
