How Data Fueled the Birth of Computer Vision

Abstract: 

Computer Vision as a field of Artificial Intelligence has seen tremendous growth in the last few years, as new algorithms and the availability of large datasets unlocked new possible applications. Empowered by the promise of data, many startups have entered this space, trying to capitalize on the technology and apply it to new commercial applications. In this talk, Michael will give an overview of Computer Vision, including a brief history, different approaches for solving common applied Computer Vision problems, and the solutions that Clarifai has built.

Bio: 

Michael Gormish is a computer vision scientist and engineer who invented algorithms used in products including video games, digital cinema, satellite and medical image acquisition and transport. He currently leads research at Clarifai in San Francisco using machine learning for image classification, search, and detection with the goal of increasing quality and the breadth of AI solutions. He earned a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering dealing with image and data compression from Stanford University. At Ricoh, he led several aspects of the JPEG 2000 standardization and provided key inventions used in photocopiers, digital cameras, tablets and imaging services. He was awarded the status of Ricoh Patent Master for being a co-inventor on over 100 US patents. At Blippar he was responsible for two search engines used to connect images from mobile phones to augmented reality experiences. He has served the research community as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, Associate Editor of the Journal of Electronic Imaging. Currently he is interested changing the world via image understanding.
